Millendreath – Let’s Go Fly a Kite

Our daughter and grandson were coming to visit today. It started off quite a dull day, but it gradually brightened up to be a lovely afternoon. We decided to head off to Millendreath Beach, which is near Looe in Cornwall.

We put some beach toys in the car – bucket and spades, shrimp net and some toy cars and trucks – to keep our three-year-old amused. My wife remembered a kite she had recently bought. It was a bargain at just 50p from our local supermarket. Hats, coats, and boots all loaded, off we went.

It was good to see that the beach at Millendreath had been raked to clear the seaweed that usually accumulates there. It can sometimes get a bit over-run if it is left for too long, and there isn’t much beach to enjoy. Although the tide was a fair way in, there was still quite a bit of beach to walk along and play on. The sun had stayed out, quite low in the sky, and it was quite warm for a late November day.

In no time we had the kite out of its wrapper, strings tied and ready to fly. It was a pretty impressive parachute-styled kite with two lines to control it. It took to the air with relative ease, much to the delight of our grandson who was beaming from ear to ear at the sight of it.

While he was enjoying himself with his mum and my wife, I managed to snap a few photos of them playing, and along the beach.

After an hour or so of play, including a plot or two of sandcastle developments, we decided to take a stroll. We put the kite, buckets and spades away and took a stroll along the beach.  There’s a walled-off area at Millendreath that looks a bit like a sea pool. Some swimmers had braved the cooler weather just off of the shore, as we walked out along the wall.

Walking back along the beach, there were two men fishing. The photos show them in a more tranquil setting than it actually was with their ghetto blaster playing drum & bass. Each to their own.

I managed to get in a few more snaps on our final lap of the beach. It was lovely to see an abundance of gulls flocking in the setting sun.

The beach cafe was open for takeaway refreshments and cakes, so it was hot drinks all around and cold milk for little man to round off a perfect afternoon.

I can’t wait to go fly a Kite again.
